Great Kills

Great Kills is a neighborhood located in the Great Kills borough of Staten Island, New York City. It is situated on the Island’s South Shore, and according to local geographers, it is the northernmost South Shore community. Bay Terrace borders Richmondtown to the North, Bay Terrace to the east, Eltingville to the west, and Great Kills Harbor to the south. Kill is an ancient Dutch word with many popular translations, such as “creek” and “channel.” Indeed, streams in the neighborhood are small, and the name could mean that several streams of this kind are found in the area.

In 2021, the area will be included in the New York State Senate by Great Kills resident Andrew Lanza, the New York State Assembly by Michael Reilly and Michael Tannousis, and the New York City Council by Joseph Borelli. All four members are part of the Republican Party. EZ Staten Island Junk Removal

The eastern portion of what is now called since 1865 Great Kills was originally named Clarendon in honor of the name of a British colonial governor, while the western portion was known as Newtown. Both were referred to as Giffords, named after Daniel Gifford, a local commissioner, and surveyor. Giffords is still used on the streets of Giffords Lane, and Giffords Glen, which are located near Giffords Glen, which is located near the Great Kills train station that was previously called Giffords, and within Giffords Glen, which is located in the Gifford School, P.S. 32. The name “Great Kills” traces back informally to at least 1664, the last year in the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam, when French settler Jacques Guyon called the area “La Grand Kills.” In the 1680s, when there was, an English Colonial government began to be formally established from 1680 until 1898, when Staten Island consolidated into New York City. Eastern Great Kills was officially part of Southfield, Richmond County, New York, and western Great Kills was officially part of Westfield. Great Kills and Staten Island’s other East Shore neighborhoods were mostly rural. They were dotted with resorts along the shore in the 1950s, following which the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge triggered massive urbanization in Brooklyn.

The 17th-century Poillon-Seguine-Britton House near Great Kills Harbor was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 but was burned in 1989 and demolished in 1996. In 1996, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics chose the area now Great Kills Park as a “Historic Aerospace Site” in 2006 to commemorate the pioneering rocket launch in 1933.

Recreation

This neighborhood houses the Great Kills Little League, one of the eight Little Leagues on Staten Island and the State Baseball Championship winner in 2011.  Two thousand children from the neighborhood are part of sports teams run by St. Clare’s Church and its spin-off, Great Kilo Soccer Club. St. Clare’s cheerleaders took home a Northeast divisional championship in 2016.
